1 John 4:19 Floral Scripture Embroidery Pattern

Beautiful picture of the finished embroidery pattern

Welcome back to Another Floral Scripture Embroidery Pattern!

Today I’m excited to present to you this 1 John 4:19 floral scripture embroidery pattern. This is the 2nd in my “Love” series. You can find the first free pattern here: Do Everything in Love Floral Scripture Embroidery Pattern – Friendstitch Embroidery.

The scripture verse is taken from 1 John 4:19. It’s a reminder of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, and how His act of love when we were not worthy enables us to extend that same love to others. I hope that as you stitch this up, you are able to meditate on God’s character and goodness. May you be inspired to share His love with those in your community as you go about your day.

The Good News

This pattern is beginner friendly and only uses a few different stitches. Because it’s part of a series, we’ll be using the same stitches as the first embroidery pattern and some of the same colours. It’s also a pretty quick pattern – it probably took me only about 4 hours. Doing the words is the hardest part; everything else works up surprisingly quickly.

The Bad News

As I was stitching this whole thing up, I had chosen a certain colour for the main big rose. Well, when I got to the end, it just didn’t look right. By that time, I had already taken all of the pictures. The proper colour codes are provided below.

More Bad News

I’m sorry to say that I made another mistake. I realized when I got to nearly the end, there was something unbalanced about the embroidery pattern, so I went back and added a second set of leaves on the right side of the pattern. As you know, I had already taken all of the pictures, so that second set is not shown until nearly the end. So sorry about that! The pattern and instructions include what needs to be done.

Materials List

  1. 7″ hoop
  2. Fabric, preferably cotton or cotton/linen blend in white or cream
  3. Water-soluble marker or heat-erasable pen. I recently bought my heat-erasable pen from this Etsy shop: Black Frixion Pen for Embroidery Pattern Transfer, Heat Erasable Transfer Method, Hand Embroidery Supplies, Pilot Disappearing Ink – Etsy Canada
  4. Embroidery needle
  5. Seam ripper or scissors
  6. Embroidery floss:
    Anchor 276 (DMC 543) – Cream
    Anchor 4146 (DMC 950) – Dark Pink
    Anchor 342 (DMC 211) – Purple
    Anchor 271 (DMC 819) – Light Pink
    Anchor 858 (DMC 524) – Light Green
    Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green
    Anchor 8581 (DMC 3022) – Teal Green

Alright, now that you’ve got the materials list, let’s get on with the tutorial! The PDF pattern is found at the bottom of this post.

Step 1 – Tracing the Pattern

Trace your pattern onto your fabric. To do that, you can put your phone with the flashlight on under a pan. There’s more information on my blog post here: Everything You Need to Know About Starting Your First Embroidery Project – Friendstitch Embroidery. If your fabric is lightweight enough, you may be able to just put your fabric in the hoop and then trace right on top of the printed pattern. Some people will tape their pattern onto a window; just do whatever is easiest and will cause your hand to cramp the least.

Step 2 – The First Rose

Using 6 strands of Anchor 276 (DMC 543) – Cream, make a woven wheel stitch for the first big rose. If you don’t know how to do that, watch this quick video by Cutesy Crafts: How to do a Woven Wheel Stitch.

Step 2 Friendstitch Embroidery 1 John 4:19

Note that cream is definitely not that orange-y colour shown in the picture. Terribly sorry about that. Sometimes when you’re doing embroidery patterns, you gotta adjust as you go. Now don’t get me wrong, that colour is a lovely colour and I have used it in plenty of projects, but I think by the time we get to the end, you will see why I ended up on using a different colour. My sister has informed me that none of you will mind the mistake because that’s life and it’s relatable. She’s right, right? It’s not terribly unprofessional? Okay good.

Step 3 – The Second Rose

Using 6 strands of Anchor 4146 (DMC 950) – Dark Pink, make a woven wheel stitch for the second rose.

Step 4 – The Purple Flower

Using 2 strands of Anchor 342 (DMC 211) – Purple, fill in the middle little flower with a satin stitch. If you don’t know how to do a satin stitch, watch this video by Cutesy Crafts: How to do a Satin Stitch.

Step 4 Friendstitch Embroidery 1 John 4:19

Step 5 – The Light Pink Flowers

Using 2 strands of Anchor 271 (DMC 819) – Light Pink, fill in the other two little flowers with a satin stitch.

Step 6 – The Dark & Light Green Stems and Leaves

Using 2 strands of Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green, fill in the flower stems with a stem stitch. Here’s another tutorial by Cutesy Crafts that shows you how to do that: How to Stem Stitch. Then, fill in the little ball at the bottom of the flower with the same colour, stitch, and thread amount.

Next, use 6 strands of Anchor 858 (DMC 524) – Light Green, and fill in the leaves around the big rose with a fishbone stitch. Watch this video by Cutesy Crafts to see how to do that: Embroider Leaves with the Fishbone Stitch.

Finally, use 6 strands of Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green, and fill in the leaves around the smaller rose with a fishbone stitch. Side note: Anchor 856 is one of my favourite greens – it just goes so well with everything!

Step 6 Friendstitch Embroidery 1 John 4:19

Step 7 – The Teal Green Stems and Leaves

Using 2 strands of Anchor 8581 (DMC 3022) – Teal Green, fill in the leaf stem on the left side of the piece with a stem stitch, then using 4 strands of the same colour, fill in the leaves with a satin stitch. Although it is not shown in the picture, at this stage you will also want to fill in the right set of leaf stems with 2 strands of Anchor 8581 (DMC 3022) – Teal Green, then fill in the leaves with 3 strands of the same colour.

Next, use 2 strands of Anchor 858 (DMC 524) – Light Green, and add a straight stitch to the centre of each set of leaves. Watch this tutorial by Cutesy Crafts to learn how to do that: How to do a Straight Stitch. I didn’t take a picture of that step because I added it at the end. So sorry!

Step 8 – The Printed Scripture Verse

Using 3 strands of Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green, fill in the printed writing with a back stitch. With these types of straight fonts, the letters can tend to look uneven. My best advice is to try and make sure that you put your stitches onto the same line of threads as the letter before it. This will hopefully ensure that each letter is the same size. Honestly, I had to take out my stitches quite a few times because I found that the words kept being different sizes. Just try your best and if it starts to look weird, take out your stiches and re-do.

Step 8 Friendstitch Embroidery 1 John 4:19

Step 9 – The Printed Scripture Reference

Using 2 strands of Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green, fill in the scripture reference with a backstitch. When you get to the colon, do a very small straight stitch in the size of circle. You could also do a french knot, but if you’re using 2 strands of thread, you might find the knot is too big. In the first embroidery pattern in this series, I used a french knot for the colon and it was fine, but for this one I wanted something a little smaller. I’m realizing that I forgot to take pictures of lots of the steps, so unfortunately there is no picture of just this step.

Step 10 – The Cursive Scripture Verse

Using 2 strands of Anchor 856 (DMC 370) – Dark Green, fill in the cursive writing with staggered back stitches. You will want each letter to be 3-4 stitches thick. Make sure you stagger them between the rows. This will give it a more natural, flowy look. No picture for just this one either, oops.

Step 11 – The Border

Last step! You’re so close, and fortunately this step only takes like 2 minutes! Using 6 strands of Anchor 858 (DMC 524) – Light Green, fill in the circular border with a running stitch. Here’s another quick tutorial by Cutesy Crafts: How to do a Running Stitch.

Step 12 – Erasing the Pattern

If you’re using a water soluble marker, wash the piece under a light stream of lukewarm water, and then let it dry overnight by placing it facedown onto a towel.

If you used a heat erasable pen, iron lightly over the stitches. I would strongly recommend getting yourself a heat erasable pen. That way, you don’t have to wait for several hours for anything to dry. As well, a heat erasable pen allows you to erase your pattern and immediately re-do it if you made a mistake while tracing.

Step 13 – Finishing the Back

If you’re keeping your project in the hoop, cut out a piece of felt and stitch it to the back. Here’s a quick tutorial by Stitcharama: How To Finish The Back Of Your Embroidery Hoop With Felt: 30-Second Tutorial.

If you plan to put the piece in a frame, just cut a couple inches past your piece and glue it to the glass part of your frame. The back piece of the frame will cover up all the stitches and you don’t need to do anything fancy. If you can afford it, there are some absolutely gorgeous wooden frames you can purchase from this Etsy shop: UniversalHappyGift – Etsy Canada.

All Done!

Hurray, you’re done! Now you can display this beautiful piece in your home, or maybe give it away as a gift. Just a reminder, the first pattern in this series is found here: Do Everything in Love Floral Scripture Embroidery Pattern – Friendstitch Embroidery.

Here’s the final piece:
